The monthly 30-second emergency light test

Every 30 days, each emergency light and exit sign must run on battery for at least 30 seconds. Here is the fastest correct way to do it.

Updated November 6, 2026

What the monthly test checks

The 30-day functional test confirms that the unit detects a power loss, transfers to battery and lights up. It is short on purpose: it proves the switching, the lamps and that the battery has charge, without draining it. NFPA 101 sets the interval at 30 days and the duration at not less than 30 seconds.

How to do it

  1. Activate the test. Standard units have a small push-to-test switch that you hold for 30 seconds, usually from a ladder. On One Touch units, press the large button once and the unit times the test for you.
  2. Watch the unit. The lamps or sign must stay at full brightness for the whole test. Dimming or flicker points to a weak battery.
  3. Check the indicator. After the test the unit should return to normal charging with no fault light.
  4. Record it. Write the date, unit location, pass or fail and initials. Use our log book.

Using the emergency light test button

The test button simulates a power failure for that one unit. The usual problem is reach and duration: holding a tiny switch over a door for 30 seconds, unit after unit. The One Touch button is built into the face of the unit, sized for a quick press, and runs the full 30 seconds on its own. A double press starts the annual 90-minute test.

Skip the test entirely with self-testing units

Self-testing models run this test automatically every 30 days. Your monthly job becomes looking at each indicator and logging the result. Read how self-testing works.

Always confirm with your AHJ. Codes are adopted and amended locally. Your Authority Having Jurisdiction (usually the local fire marshal or building official) has the final word on what your building needs.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the monthly emergency light test?

At least 30 seconds, every 30 days, under NFPA 101.

Can I test by flipping the breaker?

Yes, interrupting normal power to the circuit is a valid way to test, but it affects every unit and load on that circuit. Unit test buttons are more practical for monthly tests.
