How to test exit signs

Illuminated exit signs follow the same testing rules as emergency lights: 30 seconds every month, 90 minutes every year, with records.

Updated November 6, 2026

Step by step

  1. Look first. The legend must be clearly readable, the face clean and undamaged, directional arrows correct and nothing blocking the line of sight from the path of travel.
  2. Run the 30-second test. Use the test switch (or the One Touch button) so the sign runs on battery.
  3. Confirm full illumination. Every letter evenly lit, no dark segments, for the full test.
  4. Check the indicator returns to normal charging afterwards.
  5. Record it in your log book.

Once a year run the 90-minute test on every battery-powered sign.

Common exit sign failures

  • Dead battery: the sign is lit on normal power but goes dark on test.
  • Failed LEDs leaving letters partly dark.
  • Wrong or missing directional arrows after renovations.
  • Signs blocked by new partitions, signage or decorations.

Making exit sign testing easier

Exit signs are usually mounted high over doors, which makes the test switch the hardest part of the job. One Touch signs put a large test button on the face, and self-testing signs run both tests themselves. See our exit signs.

For placement and illumination rules, see exit sign requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Do exit signs need to be tested monthly?

Yes. Battery-powered illuminated exit signs need the same 30-second test every 30 days and 90-minute test every year as emergency lights.

How do I know if an exit sign battery is bad?

The sign stays lit on normal power but dims or goes dark during the test, or the fault indicator shows a battery problem.
