UL 924 explained
UL 924 is the safety standard US emergency lights and exit signs are listed to. Here is what it means for your purchase.
What UL 924 covers
UL 924 is the Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment. It covers battery-powered emergency lights, exit signs, combination units and related equipment intended to provide illumination and egress marking when normal power fails. Products are evaluated for safe construction and for emergency performance.
Why the listing matters
Building and life safety codes require emergency lighting equipment and internally illuminated exit signs to be listed. In practice, inspectors look for the UL 924 listing mark. A non-listed sign bought online can fail an inspection even if it lights up.
What to check when buying
- The UL 924 listing mark on the product and its documentation
- Battery duration of at least 90 minutes
- A test switch or self-testing feature that makes monthly tests realistic
- Status indicators that make faults obvious
